Northern Michigan University’s School of Art and Design is one of the largest academic departments on campus. With more than 400 students majoring in one of the school’s 14 areas of concentration, art and design is NMU’s number one major.
The areas of concentration include: art education, ceramics, drawing/painting, digital cinema, electronic imaging, furniture design, graphic communication, human-centered design, illustration, jewelry/metals/blacksmithing, photography, printmaking, sculpture and woodworking. The school also offers an art history minor.
In addition to its major and minor programs, the School of Art and Design provides many of the courses needed to meet the visual and performing arts liberal studies requirement for graduation.
