Forecasters are calling for another week of cooler temperatures ahead of us. Much of Upper Michigan enjoyed a sunny and dry holiday period over the Fourth. The strawberry crops are just starting to be harvested. This year, due to the unusually cold spring weather and late spring frosts and freezes, the season is a little later than usual, but pickers are reporting large, tasty berries.

Boat cruise tickets now on sale

NMU Alumni Association members are invited to board the Keweenaw Star for a special member appreciation cruise. This exclusive event takes place Thursday, Aug. 21 in Marquette.
Explore Marquette's harbor and coastline aboard the Star. Featuring a narrated tour by maritime historian Fred Stonehouse '70, '77. The two-hour cruise leaves promptly at 6:30 p.m. from the lower harbor park. This fun event takes place during the International Seafood Fest and NMU's Welcome Week.

Horizons in mailboxes

The directional themes President Les Wong used to frame the "Road Map to 2015", which prioritizes NMU's goals for the road ahead, are information technologies, NMU's location and international opportunities. That last priority is a two-way superhighway that will send more NMU students out to experience different cultures around the world and also bring more of the world and its diversity to campus. As you read the new issue of Horizons, you'll see that much is happening toward that goal already. For students, alumni, as well as the NMU and U.P. communities, these life-changing experiences are having world-shaping effects.

Division II finalizes six-game football TV package; includes NMU

NCAA Division II and CBS College Sports Network have announced an expanded schedule of live national football broadcasts on the network this fall. The Division II-CBS College Sports Network partnership featured three games in 2006, four games in 2007 and has increased to six games for the upcoming 2008 season. One of those games is NMU vs. Michigan Tech.
"We've received tremendous feedback on the success of these televised games from member institutions," said NCAA Division II Vice President Mike Racy. "The schools obviously love the exposure for their teams, but there's also a collective benefit because our programming emphasizes so much about Division II from a broader perspective. We're excited that CBS College Sports Network has agreed to increase that exposure."
To accommodate a national television audience, the Northern Michigan-Michigan Tech football game has been moved to Thursday, Sept. 18 with an 8 p.m. kickoff.
The broadcasts will also be syndicated through regional sports networks and made available via broadband at www.ncaa.com.

Forest Roberts Theatre announces new season

The Forest Roberts Theatre at Northern Michigan University has announced its 2008-09 “Brave New World” theatre season.  According to James A. Panowski, director of the Forest Roberts Theatre, “We’ve got something for everybody and, quite possibly, our most exciting season ever!”
The season opens Oct. 1-4 with a comedy, “The Foreigner” by Larry Shue. “Tracks in the Snow” by Neil McGowan of Hermosa Beach, California, is the winner of the 2008 Mildred and Albert Panowski Playwriting Award and runs Nov. 12-15.   The second half of the season opens with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” on Feb. 17-21.  The season wraps April 21-25 with William Shakespeare’s,” “The Tempest.” Season tickets are now available to the general public and will remain on sale through Sept. 5, depending on availability.  To request a brochure, stop by the Forest Roberts Theatre weekdays between 1 - 4:30 p.m., or call 227-2082.  Season tickets (reserved seats for all four shows) are $36 for the general public and $25 for NMU students.  Season tickets are also available from the ticket office in the Superior Dome.
