What's New, NMU?

For the week of Nov. 3, 2008

From the 6th floor

It has been unseasonably warm across Upper Michigan the past two weeks. Record high temperatures were recorded in Marquette County as the thermometer soared past 60 degrees on a number of occasions. The mild weather is expected to continue through this week, also.

A quick check of the Farmer's Almanac may depress anyone who is not a fan of winter, however. With below-normal winter temperatures and an above-normal precipitation forecast, the Farmer's Almanac predicts the Great Lakes and Midwest will see above-normal snowfalls, especially during January and February.

Alumni cheer on 'Cats in Lansing

Wildcat fans were out in full force to cheer on the NMU hockey team in East Lansing, Friday, Oct. 24. (For more on the game, see the Wildcat sports update, below). The NMU Alumni Association sponsored a post-game reception. About 60 fans stopped by Tripper's after the game.

Family Weekend celebrated

This past weekend, President Wong welcomed over 500 Northern families, students and staff members to the NMU Family Weekend tailgate party. Parents, siblings and students mingled  with staff while being entertained by the NMU marching band and enjoying a great lunch, raffle giveaways, face painting and other activities.  This is the third year that the NMU Foundation and the Center for Student Enrichment have co-sponsored the event as a way to celebrate the critical role that families play in ensuring the success of their students and in shaping the Northern experience.

From the E-mail bag

"I always enjoy the online updates and especially hearing from alumni. Here's a question that I've been wondering about: can the words for "Hail Northern" be found and posted here? I bet not many alumni, such as myself, can remember all the words. I know the history of the alma mater song but that should be posted as well. I think it was one of the NMU "Greats" who wrote it. I think all alumni would enjoy seeing the words again."

Note from the Editor: "Great question, Al. We did even better than just posting the words; we've got the music, too.
Check them out here."
