Northern Michigan University brings diverse and exciting speakers to campus throughout the year. When possible, these presentations are streamed live via the Web. The 2009 UNITED Conference was a celebration of diversity, culture, and community. There are seven UNITED tracks: UNITED in are, dance/music, diversity, film, food and research/scholarship, and service. William Ford Jr., Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ford Motor Company, was on the campus of Northern Michigan University where he interacted with NMU and Michigan Tech students.

"Anatomy of a Murder" Symposium, June 29, 2009
As part of the 50th anniversary of the filming of Anatomy of a Murder in Marquette County, NMU hosted a special filmmaking symposium. Six scholars presented on various aspects of the film. Keynote speaker Foster Hirsch focused on director Otto Preminger. Hirsch is a professor of film at Brooklyn College in New York and recently published a biography of Preminger. Other presenters included the Michigan Film Office and other associated with filming in Marquette County.

New Business Venture Competition, April 2009
Five contestants present their business plans to a panel of judges. The competition is designed to encourage entrepreneurial activism among students by recognizing and rewarding those who present detailed plans for designing and creating new business enterprises, drawing on their own ideas and inventions of those of others.

2008 UNITED Conference featuring Dr. Quirico Samonte, Sept. 2008
This conference attracts thousands of people and features more than 60 presentations and performances in the tracks of art, dance, diversity, film, food and research.

Sonderegger Symposium, Oct. 2008
The Center for U.P. Studies once again brought a sense of history to Yooper culture during its annual Sonderegger Symposium. Sixteen presentations on Upper Peninsula topics were featured at the eighth installment of the symposium.
