Jessica Jones, Admissions Counselor, Transfer Students –IL, WI, MN, U.P.
Hometown: Marquette, MI
Professional/personal biography: After graduating from high school, I spent two years at Northern Michigan University. I played on the Varsity Soccer Team,Women’s Club ice hockey team and was an Athletic Training major. I then transferred to MSU and graduated two years later with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. I loved Marquette so much that I decided to move back and worked as an AmeriCorps Worker and at the YMCA of Marquette County for a year, then worked in sales before accepting a position within NMU Athletics as the Marketing and Promotions Manager. Almost two years later I transferred into the Admissions Department and I am very happy to be here! I am recently married and living in the city of Marquette.
Most memorable college experience: Some of my best college experiences surround sports. Having the opportunity to play soccer at NMU was also a wonderful experience. When I was a freshman at NMU, my hockey team won the state championships and we have a banner hanging in Lake View Arena! When I was at MSU I had the opportunity to study abroad in Chile, South America. It was such a great time and I recommend to any one that’s able to take advantage of a study abroad program.
Also, all the different internships I held as an undergrad, definitely helped me develop my skills and gave me a lot of knowledge and advantages.
Favorite Marquette activity: My favorite activities are snowboarding, running, surfing, playing in the water and on our boat, biking and playing hockey. It’s not too often you can surf and snowboard on the same day!
Attending NMU Athletic events. Go ‘Cats!
Best advice you received regarding college or would give someone entering college: Make the best decisions you can with the resources you have available. Take advantage of all the great people, great groups, and great opportunities that present themselves. Get to know your professors, mentors, university and your surroundings. Seek help when you need it and offer when you can.
Make sure to always hand write ‘thank-you’ notes. You’re mom was right about that one!
College is awesome! People tell you that and it’s true! Make the most of it.
