New Student Checklist

Okay, so your application, transcripts and tests scores have been sent to the admissions office, and here you are looking at your Welcome to NMU folder.

Now what do you do?

Sign up for new student orientation online. Make sure you send in your orientation deposit or pay online with a credit card. The sooner you attend orientation, the more likely you are to have more choices for your first semester class schedule.
Confirmed for orientation? Now investigate the on-line math and foreign language course placement exams, and also review the information regarding your English course placement.
Sign up for housing online. Make sure you send in your housing deposit or pay online with a credit card. (See the NMU housing requirement to see how this applies to you!)
Submit the FAFSA. Students admitted for the fall semester should submit the FAFSA by March 1 to receive priority consideration for aid. Students admitted for other terms should contact the Financial Aid Office for guidance regarding timeline. You can submit this form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Once you have received your final financial aid package from NMU, look things over and call the Financial Aid Office with any questions 800-682-9797.
Sign up for the First Year Experience (FYE) Program at www.nmu.edu/fye.  There are blocks of classes for specific majors, and for those who are undecided, listed on the Web site.
Attend Orientation- learn a lot and have fun!
  • Check out the student organizations and student employment while you are on campus for orientation. (www.nmu.edu/cse and www.nmu.edu/careers
  •  Perhaps meet someone you would like to be roommates with (or would like share an apartment with if you are an eligible transfer student).
  • Get directions to Marquette and maps online.
  • Tuition billing for new students is generated after the final Fall, or the final Winter, orientation session. Payment Plans are available.
Housing and roommate assignments are usually mailed out early in August.  Contact your new roommate to discuss who is bringing what (you dont want to show up during move-in with two DVD players and no TV).
Get excited about starting your college experience at NMU!  The first official day of classes is always at the end of August.  Check out the academic calendar for this year's important dates.
Have fun at Welcome Weekend!
  • Move in
  • Meet your roommate
  • Buy your books
  • Walk around campus (check out where your classes are located)
  • Attend some activities with your family and/or your new roommate

If you have been admitted as a re-entry student, a part-time student, a military veteran or a post-baccalaureate student some or all of these may not apply to you. Contact the admissions office with any questions you have about your admission status and your next steps to becoming a NMU Wildcat!
